In Portugal à Vista S07E41, Desfolhada takes us to Calvão on a journey through memories, traditions and a way of life that was deeply connected to the land for generations. More than a look back at an old agricultural task, this episode revives a genuine spirit of community, showing how shared work, mutual support and togetherness shaped everyday life for the people who lived and worked in the region.
Desfolhada becomes a way of bringing people together around a tradition filled with stories and emotion. The initiative was organized by the Dunas de Calvão association, created by a group of friends with the aim of promoting sport, culture and experiences that form part of the community’s collective memory. With support from the local parish council, a space was prepared where people could once again experience a practice that, for many, belongs to childhood memories.
The episode follows the process long before the Desfolhada itself. The corn used for the event was locally grown, with seeds and fertilizer obtained by the association and with the collaboration of a local farmer. Planting took place on May 1, Labour Day, beginning a cycle designed to recreate, step by step, traditional methods and knowledge connected to corn cultivation. The goal was not simply to organize a celebration, but to recreate the entire journey, from planting the seed in the soil to finally threshing the corn.
When the Desfolhada begins, agricultural work becomes a gathering. In the past, neighbours helped one another with planting and harvesting crops such as corn, potatoes and beans. Corn was then taken to the owner’s home, where the Desfolhada often took place at night. These were evenings of work, but also opportunities for conversation, music, playful moments and the sharing of both good and difficult experiences. This spirit of community cooperation is at the heart of the initiative.
Among the ears of corn, some of the most fascinating customs are rediscovered. Finding milho-rei, associated with red corn, traditionally meant sharing a hug. Other ears, with red and yellow tones, were connected to the playful custom of a kiss. These traditions transformed demanding agricultural work into an experience filled with connection, humour and celebration. Songs were also an important part of the gathering, although changing times mean that singing is no longer as common as it once was.
The Desfolhada in Calvão also recreates other aspects of rural life. Once dried, the corn was prepared for threshing and could be arranged on the threshing floor in small paths and drawings made by children and adults. The episode also explores the traditional construction of a haystack and hut using wooden poles and straw. These structures had a practical purpose: storing straw while protecting the important part of the corn ear from rain and preserving feed for livestock. Every detail reveals knowledge developed through experience and passed from one generation to another.
These structures also carry lighter memories. The hut could provide shelter, become a hiding place for hens laying their eggs, and even serve as a place where adults could rest after social gatherings. For children, discovering a hidden nest of eggs was a source of excitement and created small adventures away from their parents’ attention.
The event went beyond agricultural work. Music, a DJ, traditional games and social activities were also part of the gathering. The malha game and petanca demonstrate how traditions can evolve over time. Although petanca was not originally a traditional game from the area, it was brought back by people who had lived as emigrants in France and by other communities, becoming another way for local people to gather and enjoy themselves.
One of the most meaningful elements of Portugal à Vista S07E41 is the meeting between generations. Older members of the community bring memories of difficult times, but also of experiences that continue to inspire a powerful sense of nostalgia. At the same time, the participation of younger people shows curiosity and an interest in discovering the practices that shaped the lives of their parents, grandparents and ancestors.
The final message is both simple and powerful: a tradition remains alive only when people are willing to remember it, practise it and pass it on. The Desfolhada in Calvão therefore becomes much more than a recreation of the past. It is an opportunity to bring people together, preserve traditional knowledge and recognize that cultural roots still have an important place in the present.
